Video Capsule Endoscopy
For Dogs

Video Capsule Endoscopy appointments cannot be scheduled online. Please call our office to arrange this service.

Seeing inside your dog's digestive tract without surgery or anesthesia changes everything. Our anesthesia-free Video Capsule Endoscopy service provides clear answers to help guide the best treatment plan for your dog.

Video Capsule Endoscopy for Dogs

Video Capsule Endoscopy (VCE) is a safe, non-invasive way to look inside your dog’s stomach and intestines. This innovative procedure involves your dog swallowing a small camera capsule—about the size of a large vitamin—that captures thousands of detailed images as it travels naturally through the digestive system. And the best part is that no anesthesia is necessary!

Unlike traditional endoscopy, which requires sedation and can only reach limited portions of the GI tract, VCE can visualize the entire small intestine and colon, including areas that are otherwise impossible to examine with conventional upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy. The intestinal camera capsule passes through your dog’s system over several hours, transmitting valuable diagnostic information without invasive procedures. This comprehensive view helps your veterinarian identify issues that may have been missed by ultrasound or traditional endoscopy.

Why Might My Dog Need Video Capsule Endoscopy?

Digestive Issues:

  • Unexplained vomiting or chronic diarrhea
  • Weight loss without a clear cause
  • Symptoms that continue despite normal ultrasound or endoscopy results

Signs of Internal Bleeding:

  • Melena (black, tarry stool) or blood in the stool
  • Anemia or microcytosis linked to possible internal bleeding

Suspected Conditions:

  • Ulcers or small-intestinal disease
  • Concerns for blockages or foreign material
  • Protein loss suspected through the intestinal tract

What to Expect: The Video Capsule Endoscopy Process

Before the Procedure: Your dog will need to fast for several hours before swallowing the capsule (your veterinarian will provide specific fasting instructions). This helps ensure clear images as the capsule travels through the digestive system.

During the Procedure: Dr. Bloomberg will administer the small camera capsule — it’s as simple as giving a pill. Your dog will stay either at Veterinary Diagnostic Centers, with you, or at your veterinarian’s office for the day while the capsule captures thousands of images as it naturally passes through the digestive tract. There’s no anesthesia and no recovery time needed.

After the Procedure:
The capsule will pass naturally and safely in your dog’s stool, there’s no need to retrieve it. Our board-certified internist will review the complete study captured during the procedure and generate a detailed written report of all findings, which will be shared with your veterinarian within about a week to guide your dog’s treatment plan.

How Video Capsule Endoscopy
Compares to Traditional Endoscopy

Video Capsule Endoscopy offers several advantages as a complementary diagnostic tool to traditional endoscopy. While Upper and Lower GI endoscopy require anesthesia and involve scoping only specific portions of the digestive tract, our anesthesia-free intestinal camera can examine the entire length of the small intestine — areas that are completely out of reach for traditional scopes.

This makes VCE particularly valuable when your dog continues to show symptoms of gastrointestinal disease despite normal results from ultrasound or traditional endoscopy. The capsule technology allows us to detect bleeding lesions, ulcers, inflammation, and other abnormalities throughout the digestive tract that might otherwise go undiagnosed. Because no anesthesia is required, VCE also eliminates anesthesia-related risks and recovery time, making it a safer option for dogs where sedation may be a concern.

Testimonials

Incredible care and compassion with both Kali and me. Explained plan well. Knowledgeable and experienced staff. Very impressed with the quality of care, and have highly recommended it.

Just so you know, your team reminded me of being at the Cleveland Clinic with our son. He had so many ER, ICU and doctor’s appointments, too many to count. The team at Cleveland like I had mentioned was stellar. No egos, everyone loved their job, did not throw diagnosis after diagnosis at us and really cared about our well being as well as our son. Yesterday I saw the same teamwork with Mabel. Thank you so much.

If you need an ultrasound for your pet immediately, this is the place to go. Totally compassionate staff and professional atmosphere. We had the ultrasound done on our dog at 1:00 p.m. and had the results later that day. The doctor was caring and informative and answered all of our questions. Hands down the best experience we have had with a veterinary service in a long time. Thank you so very much for offering this service - it appears it's very much needed! Highly recommend!!!

Chez Madelaine

Our dog, who can be pretty anxious and fearful with new vets/locations needed an abdominal ultrasound. The team at veterinary diagnostic centers was amazing at creating a safe, calm environment for him. We were able to stay with him, and he even took a little nap during the ultrasound. Great experience!

The staff are welcoming and professional. They are gentle and patient with both the pet and owner. Everything is explained in detail. They work as a team to ensure that procedures are complete and correct. The building is clean and quiet 🤫 ensuring everyone is comfortable. The coffee was pretty good too! Ha ha

I was so relieved by my experience here. I was very fragile having to take my cat in unexpectedly and they were very gentle and flexible when I kept changing my mind on my appointment time. Everyone had a very warm presence and they were very professional. I’m so happy my cat was in their care for her ultrasound, they kept her calm and showered her with compliments 😸 thank you for everything!

I was able to get a next day appointment for an abdominal ultrasound for my cat. Amazing!! The appointment started and ended on time, and I was able to stay with my baby the whole time. The experience was so much better than going to the ER vet. Highly recommend if you need diagnostics for your pet!!

Dr. Bloomberg and his staff—especially Anna—made what would have been a distressing experience for both pet and owners as peaceful and easy as possible. Unfortunately, the ultrasound did not yield the answers or revelations we would have liked and we ended up needing to suddenly put down our cat, Penny, two days later. That being the case, the doctor and his team were fully invested in their part of Penny's care, and for that we are still immensely grateful. Thank you.

This was an absolutely wonderful experience. The staff was so kind and patient with my very nervous and hyper (and LARGE) Great Dane. They took what is a scary and stressful situation for me, and made it calm and comfortable, explaining every step. HIGHLY recommend.

This place is wonderful. From the moment I walked through the door I felt welcome and was treated with such compassion and sensitivity. Everyone who works there explained everything to me and at the end of the ultrasound, Dr Bloomberg came in and answered all of my questions. My dog, Hank, was put at ease immediately. They even gave me their opinion when I asked. They followed up the next day and it made me feel cared for. Any time you need any type of diagnostic test for your doggie, this is the place. I cannot recommend them enough!!!

Amazing to find Veterinary Diagnostic Centers! I did some research into places that offer ultrasounds and allow pet owners to be with their pets during the process and am so happy I found VDC! The people are great - well informed, courteous (on the phone and in person), and very accommodating. The office was very clean and the staff made my dog feel right at home with lots of love! Thank you, VDC! I highly recommend Veterinary Diagnostic Centers!

Vittorio

Amazing experience - Thank you Dr. Bloomberg and your staff. I came here for my cats EKG because the estimate my vet gave me was extremely high. Everyone was so professional, the environment was very cat friendly. The techs were amazing and treated my cat like one of their own. Results came back within 24 hours and Dr. Bloomberg called and gave me very detailed description of the results. Highly recommend this place for any diagnostic testing!!

Courtney Fitzgerald

I work in the veterinary field and have referred patients here and have heard nothing but great things. When I needed an ultrasound for my own cat, I immediately went online to book a next day appointment. Every staff member treated me and my nervous kitty with love and care. They do everything they can to make your pet feel comfortable before, during, and after the imaging. The prices are also very reasonable. Don't hesitate!

Ana Valbuena

I was very grateful to find a quiet, compassionate place to take my cat for ultrasound instead of dropping her off for hours at our regular vet. We were able to get an appointment quickly, and it was really everything I hoped for in terms of care for her and communication for me. I’m thankful for their services and highly recommend them.Poppa thanks you as well for the treats! And his pit bull sister Gabby thanks you for making sure he was OK.
